Media Coordinator:

Job Description

The Media Coordinator will be responsible for producing all media releases, distributing the releases to all of our media and PR contacts, and managing the media response to the releases by connecting media requests with designated Bad Science Watch spokespeople.  The Media Coordinator will report directly to the Executive Director and will work with the committee or project manager requesting the media release to produce a concise, detailed and efficient message.

Qualifications

The successful volunteer will have experience crafting media releases and communicating with the media and will have a professional demeanor and strong interpersonal communications skills.  Training in media relations or communications would be an asset and a general knowledge of science advocacy topics will be helpful.

Time Commitment

On average 1-2 media releases will be released per quarter with a 1-2 day response period. Ability to respond to email communications within a 24 hour period will be essential.  Total time commitment will average 4-6 hours per month, on average, with an “on-call” period of several hours the day of the release.  The time of release is flexible to accommodate the availability of the volunteer.

Website Manager:

Job Description

The website manager will be responsible for maintaining the Bad Science Watch website including updating content and managing the WordPress environment.  Content creation is not required. The website manager will report directly to the Executive Director and will work with the committee or project manager requesting the update to produce a professional, dynamic website that communicates our message effectively.

Qualifications

The successful volunteer will have experience working with WordPress and knowledge of HTML and content management systems.

Time Commitment

Total time commitment will average 4-6 hours per month, on average.  Schedules are flexible to  accommodate the availability of the volunteer.

Project Leaders:

Job Description

Project leaders are dynamic, self-directed individuals with a commitment to science-based policy and working in outcome oriented groups. Responsibilities include setting and maintaining the timeline for a project, delegating tasks, identifying internal and external risks and shaping the end product of the group, be it a position paper, web content or public campaign. Projects available will include our Natural Health Products Marketing Project, our standing committee on Natural Health Products Monograph consultations, and an upcoming vaccine communications project.

Qualifications

No experience is necessary, however a knowledge of project planning is an asset.

Time Commitment

Total time commitment will depend upon the project assigned.  The period of commitment will vary from 3 to 6 months and during the project period an average of 2-4 hours per week may be necessary.  Schedules are flexible to  accommodate the availability of the volunteer.

Evaluators for the Natural Health Product Marketing Project:

Job Description

Evaluators will apply the preset web-based tool to evaluate websites for specific content in the area of natural health product marketing.  This project is designed to survey for compliance to Health Canada Regulations and identify dangerous promoters of un-tested health claims.  Output from this project will be sent to the Market Health Products Directorate and be used to shape future campaigns.

Qualifications

No experience is necessary, but a knowledge of Google apps will be an asset.

Time Commitment

Total time commitment will be for a 2 month period, 2-3 hours a week at first, with meetings extra.  This period is flexible and shorter duration activity is possible as well.

Researchers for the NNHPD Monograph Consultation Committee:

Job Description

Researchers will evaluate the safety and efficacy of natural health products in the context of the Non-prescription, Natural Health Products Directorate monograph public consultation process.  Activities will include literature reviews, evaluation of claims, and communication of findings via consultation documents.  Individuals will work independently and within a team environment.

Qualifications

No experience is necessary, but a background in science at the post-secondary and graduate level is an asset.  Some training will be available.

Time Commitment

Total time commitment will vary. Consultations are released sporadically, about 2-3 a quarter, and the volunteer’s involvement in each consultation process can be as per their availability.  During a consultation, about 3-4 hours a week for a few weeks will be necessary.
